Which to Choose: Security Grilles or Security Shutters?

Shuretech • 20 October 2022

Implementing the right security measures for your commercial business are key to offering you reassurance that your premises are safe when unattended.

Security grilles and security shutters are both effective measures in ensuring the safety of your commercial building. But what is the difference between these and which is better? Keep reading to find out.

Security Grilles

Security grilles are barriers that fit in front of doors and windows. They are composed of latticed metal and tend to be made to measure, securely fitting to all corners of the space they are protecting.

Because of their lattice structure, security grilles do not obstruct the view into a shop front - which many store owners see as an advantage. This restored visibility allows passersby and potential customers to still see into your shop during out-of-business hours, acting as a form of passive advertisement for what services you offer and/or what products you sell.

As well as being able to see in, you are able to see out. This may seem redundant, but in actuality this acts as a deterrent for intruders in knowing that their presence inside will be easily noticed from any number of people walking past.

On the flip side, there is also the risk that this actually incentivises some intruders, since they are able to see the value of what your store contains. This makes them more likely to break in or steal from you when you are open with prior knowledge of where your most expensive assets and goods are.

Security shutters

The other popular choice of protection for commercial properties are security shutters. Unlike security grilles, these are metal sheets that completely conceal the inside of your building from view.

There is an obvious benefit in commercial roller shutters in the fact that they are visual obstacles. This discourages anyone from attempting to break in, since they would be aware of the amount of attention they would bring to themselves in trying to break through solid steel.

Alongside this, they are also great for weather protection. Offering insulation and protection from the sun or harsh weather conditions, security shutters are great for protecting the integrity of both your property and your contents.

The convenience of shutters also plays to their strengths; most security shutters operate on a rolling system, making them extremely easy to open and close - which is especially handy in emergency situations (i.e. containing a fire).

Whilst they offer durable and reliable security, they do come with their downsides. One of such being increased vandalism. Many people will target security shutters as their canvas for graffiti; this not only requires you to invest your time and money into cleaning your shutters more often, but it reduces the professional appearance of your property when closed.

Another downside to shutters is their cost. Commercial roller shutters tend to be more expensive to install than security grilles, which for small business owners especially may seem too high to justify. However, despite the initial high expense, they are a worthwhile and economical investment.

So, Which is Better?

There is no definitive answer here in which you should invest in. Security shutters no doubt offer better protection, but this comes at a higher cost. Security grilles on the other hand are not only cheaper, but are a great way to advertise what your business has to offer.

Think about the needs of your business, the size and contents of your commercial property and the area in which you are based. Comparing your requirements to what each security measure has to offer will be the best way to decide which is best for you.
